La ville de Ouidah est riche de patrimoine culturel dont le plus important est la religion Vodun. Dans cette cité on dénombre nettement toutes les 41 Divinités qui constituent les fondements de la religion Vodun. Plus de 80% des populations à Ouidah fondent leur foi sur le Vodun. Ouidah est la terre sacrée des HOUEDA qui sont des véritables adorateurs du culte Python. C’est à Ouidah qu’a eu lieu la première édition du Festival Mondial des Arts et de la Culture Vodun (1992). C’était le pèlerinage mondial de tous ceux qui ont le Vodun en commun. Le Chef suprême mondial du Vodun est aussi à Ouidah./The city of Ouidah has a rich cultural heritage, the most important element being the Vodun religion. In this city you can find the 41 divinities that form the foundation of the Vodun religion. More than 80% of the population of Ouidah follow the Vodun religion. Ouidah is the sacred land of the HOUEDA who are the true believers in the cult of the Python. It is in Ouidah, in 1992, that the first World Festival of the Arts and of the Vodun Culture took place. This provided an opportunity for pilgrimage to all Vodun followers throughout the world. The Supreme Chief of Vodun for the world is also in Ouidah. 

Ouidah, Terre du Christianisme/Ouidah, Land of Christianity En 1861 la ville de Ouidah a accueilli les Pères BORGHERO et FERNADEZ des Sociétés des Missions Africaines. C’est de là qu’est partie l’évangélisation du Bénin. Les deux missionnaires se sont fait aider par les chefs de la religion Vodun surtout pour la construction de la Basilique de Ouidah. Ceux sont les adeptes du Vodun qui partaient sur sept kilomètres chercher du sable et l’eau. Ils étaient aussi utilisés comme la main d’œuvre sur le chantier. / In 1861 the evangelization of Benin began with the arrival in Ouidah of Fathers Borghero and Fernandez of the Society for African Missions. These two missionaries were able to enlist the help of the Vodun chiefs in the construction of the Basilica of Ouidah. It was the Vodun followers who provided manual labor and who traveled seven kilometers to retrieve sand and water for the building’s construction. 


Ouidah, Ville Mystique/Ouidah, Mystical City Ouidah a donné la preuve d’une cohabitation pacifique des religions. La seule Basilique du Bénin est érigée en face d’un couvent Vodun qu’est le temple des Pythons. De cette façon, l’exemple de Ouidah est unique au Bénin et en Afrique. / Ouidah provides living proof of the peaceful cohabitation among religions. The only basilica in Benin is located directly across from a Vodun convent. In this aspect, Ouidah is unique to Benin and in Africa. 


La Consécration de Ouidah/The Consecration of Ouidah 150 ans après le démarrage de l’évangélisation du Bénin, le Pape Benoit XVI en visitant le pays a fait honneur à la ville de Ouidah. Les chefs et Adeptes Vodun étaient présents pour sa visite, indication de l’ouverture de la religion Vodun et son soutient de la cohabitation pacifique./150 years after the initiation of the evangilization of Benin, Pope Benoit XVI honored Ouidah by visiting the city during his trip to Benin. The Vodun chiefs and their followers were present for this visit, indicating the open-mindedness of the Vodun religion and its support of peaceful cohabitation.
